I was staying in a hotel for two days and I decided to experiment a bit. I took a bag of chips I had to munch on and marked a faint line (so faint you wouldn't notice it, unless you knew it was there) with a pen. Then I took the clip and lined it up with the faint mark. Resting the bag on the bed, I left the room. Coming back a few hours later after housekeeping had visited, I checked the bag to notice the clip was slanted, and not lined up at all with the faint mark.
Guard your chips!

You mention that you left it on the bed. Since they would most likely violate housekeeping policy by making the bed over the errant chips I would say most likely contents had settled ( favorite line of the cereal box). Next time count them. Or you could have Trailer trash in the Housekeeping staff, either way I'm glad you've solved Cancer and world hunger and are now working on secondary pressing problems.

As I'm certain the lab facilities for curing cancer are generally found in hotel rooms. That's it. The next time I go to a hotel I'm demanding a complementary particle accelerator.
