I traded someone a dime because the vending machine wouldn't take theirs. Then I looked at it and saw it was a silver 1963 dime.
I still haven't seen the nickels yet.

What I can't stand is how people hord novel money so it never gets to the people. I'd LOVE to use dollar coins, but nobody spends the Sacageweas cause their a pretty yellow. And the two dollar bill is perfect for betting at the racetrack, but you can't get your hands on them. I recall reading that the vast majority of $2 bills are not technically in circulation because of people who collect them based on an assumption that they're worth something... Yes, they are, in fact, worth something... FACE VALUE, YOU JERKS. Ahem, excuse me. I also find 50-cent pieces nifty. I'd say its reverse (of the Kennedy one) is the most splendid design on any current US coin. My favorite historical US coin design is the obverse of the Walking Liberty half dollars (which I actually have a couple of.) I got some uncleaned Roman coins through eBay last year, but that didn't turn out so well. *sigh* And I did the same thing as you once, Brezhnev, only it netted me 1964 quarter. I tried to point it out to the guy, but I don't think he really understood. Must be the same sort as those who hoard $2 bills.

Collecting coins? Is this an American thing? I don't think I could point out anybody I know who does it...well, anybody who admits to doing it anyway. The closest I came was trying to keep my lincon headed coin (is that a penny?) that I had touched on the lincon memorial steps a few years back, since it apparently brings you good luck. But I couldn't even keep that and it had mysteriously disappeared within a few hours. I have come to suspect that my shallow pockets and the tilted back seats in the subway got the better of it. But at least I have a good explanation for my appaulingly bad luck/general stupidity. I tell you, you can't look away for a second these days without a lamp-post being directly in your heads way.....

Collecting coins? Is this an American thing? Where are you from unlimited? I'm from Canada, and quite a few people collect coins here....but they put so many "special edition" coins out there, I think it's lost it's novelty....

I really wnat a couple of those swanky Australian bills made out of Plastic, saw them on History channel the other day. trés 1337.
My favorite half dollar was the Franklin one and the 76 dollar coin was pretty sweet, eagles landing on teh moon and all, didnt know they could fly n a vaccume and all.

Comrade, you mean to tell me you were unaware that an eagle could fly on the surface of the moon? Clearly the vacuum of space should be no problem, as we all know the moon must have an atmosphere; for how else could it be made of such delicious cheese and support a population of gigantic, tyrranical ants who have enslaved our astronauts?

I figured the Eagle had access to superior ancient French Spame devices.
as we all know the Ancient French also known as the Atlanteans conquored space while teh resto fo teh world was still fleeing from the Dinosaurs and Proto asshats.

I don't really collect coins. All I have is a 118 year old dollar coin (1886) and three white pennies (made of steel instead of copper in WWII) that someone gave me (oh, and that dime I have around here somewhere).
Still no nickel.

I used to collect coins and stamps when I was a kid, but now I am more into baseball cards. I still haven't seen the nickel yet either.
