Politically: Clinton Morally: TR, AKA "the lion"! I would like to point out Reagan did not beat Communism since the USSR was never Communist, and persay you do use that general idea of only Capitalist and Communist, there are still "Communist" nations in the world. Mind you the faults of the Soviet Union went all the way back to 1924 and increased in the 70's when Military spending drove them to nothing and distrubution was a major internal problem. Reagan did "invent" SDI and it drove the Soviets into spening more than they could afford and that led to the downfall of the USSR. I could go on for hours, but mind you that Reagan "crushing" "communism" is not a good reason. As well in capitalism there is a period of economic boom and economic decline that determines the market. He was in power during thoughs years, while Bush is now in the decline years. Did anyone say FDR, Kennedy, most of 1800 Presidents? They all had economic growth beyond some citizen's wildest dreams. Before WW1, the 30's, the 70's, and now are times of economic decline. It will go up if the revolution does not happen first. I actually said Reagan to just get a rise out of you, RedCommunist. I do think he's one of the greatest presidents of all time though. Seriously though, I think FDR was the greatest of the great. How about this: who do you think is the worst US president ever?

I have to say, if this was in the NS Gerneral forum, it would have turned into a Bush/Clinton-bashing thread ten posts ago. Congratulations on being more mature than the general NS population.

Eisenhower was strictly opposed to Communism and Ho Chi minh was a Communist so negotiating was strictly out of the question. Eisenhower's genius was that he forsaw and made a speech about the dangers of the military industrial complex and its influence on society.

That's because the average NPO citizen has an IQ about 20 points higher than the average NationStates forumite.

Reagan used to scare me. I remember him as being a very scary fellow surrounded by equally scary fellows. Iran/Contra was under his administration, the Contras, Noreiga and his drug laundering under the watchful eye of the CIA. What scared me most about him was his complete lack of tact. I remember him constantly getting into trouble over what he regarded as bon mots. Announcing into a microphone at a press confrenece he thought was dead that the Soviet Union was declard illegal and bombing would commence in 15 minutes. Making speeches with quotes from movies he attributed to RL. He seemed to be an actor tenuously linked to reality. In retrospect given he's fully in the grip of Alzheimer's its more than likely he was.

Why are you over looking the good old presidents of yore? Abe Lincoln! Cool beard, cool hat won a civil war. What more could you want?

The worst President of all time? Andrew Johnson. He was too loyal to his Southern roots during Reconstruction after the Civil War and pulled the Reconstruction efforts and permitted the Southern Democrats to put the recently freed slaves under Jim Crow laws. He was the biggest racist and set this country back to the Stone Age.

Why are you over looking the good old presidents of yore? Abe Lincoln! Cool beard, cool hat won a civil war. What more could you want? Warts and all? Little matter of not signing that Emancipation declaration......Eddie Murphy did a brilliant sketch on how Abe wasn't his favorite President anymore on SNL. Why is it so many Presidents are the subject of assassination attempts? It doesn't seem very civil or enlightened, just as easy to get involved politically to oust them with no fear of having the bottom bunk for 25 to life and wearing a ring for a 7 ft 250lb angry cell mate named Clarence. **Like the Avatar Doomraiden, Col.Kilgour rocks

Why is it so many Presidents are the subject of assassination attempts? Heh, just made me think of that line in Black Adder: "That's the worse idea since Abraham Lincoln said "I'm bored of kicking about the house, Lets go and see a show""

Oh Reagen was a good President, just the reasons you stated wasn't why. Worst: G.W. Bush Bush is far from the worst president ever. I would have to go with Warrior Thorins choice. Lincoln was cool too. Sure, he freed the slaves for all the wrong reasons, but hey, he freed them, bottom line. You can't argue with results. Oh yeah and let's not forget that he reunited the States.

The problem with having a 'best' or 'worst' poll of things like president is that we only tend to remember presidents in our lifetimes.
So the few people who have reffered to presidents before about 1970 deserve a pat on the back for their knowledge of their own country's history, somethign sadly lacking in most people.
IT would be very hard for me to say whom I thought the worst or the best would be for exactly this reason - I don't know enough about US history to make a valid judgement.
Still, various people pop into mind - Hoover, LBJ (vietnam), Reagan, GWB, but again all apart from Hoover in recent times.
Better to have a poll of the worst and best in the past 30 years, or the worst and best of a particular period.
